Dusting Off the Sewing Machine

My project for the last few weeks has been window treatments. We bought this house with the intention of only living in it for 2 years. We have now been here for over 15 years. With the state of the economy we figure we will be here another 15 years. With that in mind I deiced it was time to get rid of the mid 90's lace curtains.

I started in my 3 year old's bedroom. The nursery was originally decorated in monkeys, but I thought it was time to put away the baby stuff. That was a sad day. I let Neil pick out the fabric. It is not what I would have chosen for him, but it's his room and he wanted strips and an outer space theme.

The curtains for the kitchen are store bought, but I made the Celtic knot bunting to match. These light covers were bought on a trip we took to Seattle in June. I purchased them from the Bella Luz Studio I love them so much that I turn them on every night.

This is the back door. I made this curtain out of some left over fabric. The bunting is made out of the same material as the ones in the kitchen. I added buttons for extra interest.

The felt garland was made by local artist Dina Fernandez.

I tend to buy fabric that I have fallen in love with. Then I store if for years on end until I fine the perfect project. This zodiac fabric is one of these fabrics. The bunting is made up of our families zodiac symbols.

Dia de los Muertos Necklaces

I adore Dia de los Muertos. It happens to be one of my most favorite holidays. Every year I try to come up with a new hand crafted project. This year I found these amazing resin skulls at Mexican Sugar Skull. They are really affordable at only $8 a set.

I sent them to my father who drilled holes in them for me. Power tools and I do not get along well.

I hit them with a coat of white paint.

Then each piece was painted to match the personality of the person who was to receive it. I added a few beads and a chain and voila , the Dia de los Muertos necklace was born.

For the last few years I have been making sugar skulls for Dia de los Muertos. This obsession started when Julie (a very dear friend) suggested we have a Dia de los Muertos party. We had so much fun planning and throwing the party that when she moved to Montana I decided to continue on with the tradition of making sugar skulls.

This year I offered to make the sugar skulls for a group of women who like to get together and do different projects. It was so fun seeing what everyone came up with. Most had no previous experience with this traditional holiday. They had no foundation within which to start, so each skull turned out truly unique.

My old mold got broken, so I visited one of my favorite on line shops, Mexican Sugar Skull. They carry a large selection of molds and sugar skull making supplies. They also have a great selection of decorations, jewelry and fabric.

We used a selection of silk flowers, gems and jewels, and frosting.

This is the jacket I made for Halloween this year. This jacket was repurposed from 2 dresses and a paints and top set. The shear skull fabric was purchased years ago and has been waiting for just the right project.

I loosely used a pattern I bought from Katwise. If you are not familiar with her sweater coats they are a must see.

Lowly Worm Now Lives Here

My son has fallen in love with Richard Scarry’s Busy Town. For his birthday he asked for a Lowly Worm “lovie”. When I was a kid I remembered that I had Richard Scarry’s Biggest Make-It Book Ever, it was the coolest kids’ activity book ever, but the best thing about it was the Lowly Worm doll pattern. As a kid I spent hours lovingly cutting and sewing my very own worm. I adored him. Armed with this special childhood memory I went to my computer and spent endless hours searching the Internet for a copy of this highly treasured book. After much anticipation and excitement I was disappointed when I found out that this book is out-of-print and the most affordable copy I found was $40 over my budget. Not wanting to disappoint Neil on his birthday I put on my creative thinking cap and went to work.

I got out some brown packing paper and drafted out a pattern.

Several weeks ago my computer took on a super bug . It died a horrible death, but my wonderful brother-in-law came to the rescue and was able to bring it back from the beyond. Now that I am up and running once again I can finally post some new work.

This necklace was created around this Raku skull bead. The skull bead came from a very special friend and I have been waiting to find the perfect way to show it off. Blue crushed velvet, ribbon and mixed glass beads.

I made this for a gift months ago and then forgot to post the images. My friend Deidre is a partner in a theater project in Bakersfield California and I made this jacket for her to wear on opening night. I constructed this jacket out of 2 black velvet shirts, a pair of black velvet paints and 2 black velvet shirts. From this mix I created this jacket. Deidre is MUCH smaller than me so my dress form is too big, therefore the jacket is a bit stretched.

I started the base of the jacket with this long-sleeved top. I cut up the front seam and serged the raw seams

You might be surprised to find out that I am still creating... I have been so busy with work lately that I have little time for anything else. This weekend I did make the time to convert a pair of clip on earrings. I found these beauties at an estate sale for $3. Some wire, beads, 14 karat hooks and voilà, new earrings.

OWOH Winnings and New Friends

I enjoy participating in the OWOH event each year. I have meet some of the most interesting, generous and kindhearted people but this year had to top them all.

I was the lucky winner of not one but two heart necklaces. Holly's Folly made this lovely glass heart pendant. The photo cannot do it justice as it is far lovelier in person.

This winged heart pendant is from Ametista LLC. I can hardly wait to wear this with my Steampunk outfit that I am wearing to Abeny Park in April.

Due to a slight mishap I was introduced to someone I may not have meet any other way. Waxela from Spirit Mama sent me this package of goodies as a thank you. Look at these clever fabric coved buttons and this handcrafted goddess.

Winning beautifully handcrafted items is always fun, but more importantly OWOH has introduced me to some wonderful people who have replenished my faith in human kindness, and for that I am truly grateful.

I Got a Job!

I got a job! This is one of the reasons why I have been an absent blogger. Between work, running after a 2 year old, house chores and the occasional sleep I have had little time to do much of anything else. But I got a great job at the Tinman Gallery. Sue Bradley is the owner and she is so wonderful to work for. The gallery features the work of local area artists. Sue is such an avid reader that she also carries a wide selection of book and just this summer she added Tinman Too, which is the most enchanting children’s book store. Did I mention that I love my job? Nothing could be better than working in an art gallery AND a book store.

Paper Princess

I love crowns, to make then, to wear them and to give them as gifts. I think this stems from my childhood and wanting to be a princess. Now that I am an adult, I no longer want to be a princess (I can save my own self, thank you very much), but my love of wearing a crown has never gone away. I created these crowns for two of my friends. They like to dress up as much as I do.

These crowns are constructed out of paper making them very light weight and easier to wear. Each was painted in this bronze metallic color.

I cut out a crescent moon and added the fine silver glitter. Some paper flowers, butterflies, and long steamers of ribbon for were added for that touch of extra princessness.

Knitted Gift

If you happen to remember last year I started on a pair of blue bamboo knitted gloves from the book Knitting New Mittens and Gloves. Well those got put on the back burner as winter became spring and outdoor activates took precedence. Now that fall is officially here I once again picked up my knitting basket. To my dismay I am not able to find the already started gloves. They are here somewhere, but my two year old has taken a liking to my yarn and everything made from it. I needed a last minute gift for a friend’s birthday so I went to work on these purple fingerless gloves. I probably should have gone to the store and bought something as I stayed up way past my bedtime to finish them, but I love giving and receiving handcrafted items. She loved them which made the late hours worth all the effort.

Witches Ball

Thanks to everyone who left their kind words on my blog about the hat for the ball...
Now for the bad news. I have no pictures of myself from the ball. I was so preoccupied with everyone else’s costumes that I forgot to take one of myself. Silly!!! Here is a picture, minus me, of my corset.

We had the most amazing night. I was fortunate enough to see Koreshakti Tribal Fusion which is a remarkable blend of contemporary belly dancing accompanied by industrial, traditional, hypnotic live music. Another reason as to why I forgot to take more photographs. I was so enthralled with their performance that I did not want to miss one moment of the entertainment.

I Never Claimed I was a Milliner

My hat making skills leave much to be desired. I am working on a costume for a masquerade ball that is happening at the end of this month. I decided to add a hat to my costume. I visited the local costumer and looked for a hat to decorate. Unfortunately for me, I have a VERY small head. Nothing fit. So I had this bright idea of making my own. When I worked for the Civic Theater in the costume department, many years ago, I was asked to create some very simple, clip in the hair, hats. It should be easy, right. Not really. I put pencil to paper and drew up some plans. After many stops and starts, this is what I created. My mother would call this a 20 pacer. Good thing the ball is being held in a darkened room.

The basic hat construction is out of poster board. The velvet came from a second hand skirt and the feathers were pilfered from a feather duster. I think the overall look turned out well, just don’t get to close.

Originally I was going to add two large bird wings to each side of the hat, but at the last minute I changed my mind. I thought they might be too heavy and would collapse the hat.

I have been asked to create a “Halloween” item for a basket that is being raffled off at the end of this month. Because my time is so valuable right now (neck deep in costume making) I fell back on old talents. In another life I was a full time florist, for 10 years as a matter of fact. Wreaths are one of those rare things I can put together while, balancing the checkbook, planning dinner, chasing after Neil, talking to my mother on the phone and running a load through the washer. It’s been more than 11 years since I work in a flower shop yet, I still dream about flowers and the crazy ladies I worked with.

A Very Dear Friend Turns 40

Julie, my life-long friend, is turning 40 this Monday. We meet in grade school and have been very close friends ever since. She now lives in Montana and I could not get there to celebrate with her. So to honor the day of her birth I put together a box of goodies.

No birthday is complete without a crown for the birthday girl. This started out as a cheap ($1) paper crown. After glitter, paint, paper, glue and a few gems this is what I created.

I made this bunting out of left over fabric.

Julie is a fan of owls so I made her this purse out of Japanese fabric.

And for a little touch of retro she got this owl apron. The pattern is the same one I used to make my Dia de los Muertos apron. She will look very "professional" while she is baking cookies for her family.

I hope her special day is filled with much merry making and joy.

Heart of Gold

My garden is in harvest mode. We have had corn, peas, two batches of potatoes and collard greens. I have already put up three types of pickles and am now debating on what I should do with the abundance of tomatoes. But noting is more exciting than this wee-little cantaloupe. Cantaloupe is a new crop for us and while many would say growing one, little, still green cantaloupe is no real feat in gardening; we look upon this as a success. It might be small, but we hope that it will someday grow into a real cantaloupe.

Wow, what has happened to summer? I know that it has been a long time since I posted my last blog and for that I am sorry. Between out of town guests, gardening, multiple birthday celebrations (too many to count), yard work, the occasional swim and all of the things we put off due to snow, most of my time has been sucked up into a one-way void. Yet with all of the summer mayhem that happens from June through September I have been able to create a few new pieces of work.

Here is a glimps of a project I am working on. I really hope to have about 6 of these done by September.

West Port Pirates

Ever year we like to take a trip to the ocean. I am particularly fond of the Washington Coast. In the past years we have stayed at Kalaloch, but this year my mother-in-law wanted to go to Pacific Beach. I had never been there, but I have an adventurous spirit and am always ready to go anywhere on a moments notice. This is the first year that the annual trip was made into the Davis Family trip. All of my husband’s family was able to attend. Right before we left one of my sister-in-laws informed all of us that there was to be a Pirate Festival in West Port. One to never turn down the opportunity to dress up in pirate garb I packed my gear with excitement.

My Grandmothers Frosting

I was asked by a dear friend what I had been up too lately… well, between cleaning out the basement, chasing around a two year old and getting ready to spend 5 glorious days at the ocean, I made a real honest to god home-made cake for my mothers birthday. To celebrate I pulled out a book of my grandmothers recipes. My grandmother was an interesting woman who lived a most extraordinary life. She grew up in Shattuck OK in the early part of the 20th century. Her mother died when she was 15 and her father was sent away to prison for bootlegging. She was left to raise her younger sisters with very little help. She had a high school diploma, attended art school and spoke several languages. After my grandfather died my family moved in with her so she would have help on the ranch. She was a part of my daily life until I moved away to Seattle. We were very close and when she died I was devastated. I still miss hearing her stories. One of my grandmothers greatest gifts was her baked goods. In her house you never, and I do mean never, got a piece of toast that was not burnt or a cup of coffee even a hardened truck drive could drink, but she made the most amazing pies and cakes. They did not look like fluffy, air filled pastries you can buy from a sparkly clean upscale pastry shop. Her baked goods had heft and they were never pretty to look at, but they always tasted like heaven. For my mothers birthday I made a family favorite, Caramel Frosting.

My grandmother always put this frosting on a chocolate cake. My mother is not crazy about chocolate so I made a yellow cake instead.

As you can see I am wearing my new apron, I forwent the black cocktail dress and heels and went for comfort instead, my grandmother would have approved.

This frosting is a bit tricky but I knew I had it right when it smelled like my grandmothers frosting.

Now if I just had my grandmothers oil sludge in a cup and one of her stories I would be truly content.

Aprons and 3" Heels

Several months ago we went to visit friends in Montana and I saw this fabric in a shop in Missoula. I am an extremely thrifty sort of person and I find it is very difficult for me spend money on myself. This fabric was a bit on the pricy side and I walked away without buying any of it. On the way home we had not even made it over the Montana/Idaho border and I was already kicking myself. So I called my friend and pleaded (I didn’t have to beg too hard) with her (she was nice enough not to say, “I told you so”) to make the 45 minute drive from her home to purchase 2 yards of this glittery Dia de los Muertos fabric for me. Julie understands me so well.

After much contemplation I decided I needed to make something that would highlight this sparkly fun fabric. I come across this Simplicity pattern for a retro apron in a local shop and I knew I had found just the right item for my new fabric.

A few weeks ago I found this vintage mint green rick rack in a large box of trim at an estate sale.

I added a pocket with just a hint of the mint green rick rack.

And I lined the inside with this black spiral fabric.

I can hardly wait to wear this apron. I think I might need to make cookies tomorrow.

I have often gone back over old blogs and wondered where my head was at when I wrote them. After 6 years of college, you would think I would have a better grasp of the English language, but apparently not. In my own defense I do have a two year old who requires my constant attention. So please keep that in mind when you find that I have composed a bit of misspelled twaddle. Speaking of which, his majesty is in need of my services. I must be running along.

Rose Petal Jam

To me nothing tastes better than homemade jam on warm toast with coffee on a cool fall morning. That little hint of spring as winter approaches. Jam making is a messy process; well it is for me anyway, so I like to make several batches at a time. After perusing jam recipes on the internet I concluded that I would like to change up an old favorite and add a new recipe to my jam making process this year.

We have a hedge of wild yellow roses that borders our yard. They are magnificent when they are in full bloom, but they only last a very short time. They are prolific and it has always seemed a shame that all of the beautiful petals should go to waste. I have never eaten rose petal jam but it sound decadent and worth a try.

I made traditional rhubarb, strawberry jam (my favorite) but this year I added rose petals to the mix.

The lemon rose is new to my repertoire. It has a distinctive sweet and sour flavor and a yummy golden hue.

I found a recipe for dandelion jam which I think I will try next. That is, if I can collect enough dandelions.

Update...sheesh maybe I should learn to use spellcheck more often...

Mother's Day Gifts

Look at my beautiful Mother’s Day Gifts. I know that Mother’s Day was weeks ago but the last gift just arrived in the mail and I had to share. The pendent is from Stephanie Pui-Mun Law. She is the creator of the Shadowscapes Tarot Deck. If you have not seen this new deck it is stunning. Stephanie is a prolific watercolor artist and her work is quit affordable. I am lucky enough to own several of her prints and now this lovely pendent.

My second gift is from the very talented Fairsteps. If you have not visited Mrs. Fairysteps site before I highly recommend taking a look. She has the most charming line of leather and knitwear goods. From the very first time I saw this web site I was in love. I hope that someday I will be able to purchase a pair of her handcrafted shoes, but for now I will happily settle for this darling pouch.

Please excuse my absence lately as I have taken on the job of archiving the family photo collection. What I thought was going to be a maybe a few hundred photos, has turned into more like thousands. I have been diligently working on this project for weeks… estimated date of completion, fall of 2015. You think I jest.

Purse Crazy

The summer months are filled with birthdays and I thought that these cute and easy to sew purses were the perfect gifts, so I made several. I will now be filling them with little individual personal gifts and getting them placed in the mail. I like giving handmade birthday gifts.

I made this necklace several years ago. I had it up for sell until I heard that Laura Mears was no longer offering the porcelain dragon pendants. I then found myself not wanting to part with it. She is an amazing artist and you can buy her current pieces from Beyond Beads

This necklace is very long. I created it so that other pieces could be worn with it for a layered look. There are pearls, turquoise, amethyst, and vintage buttons in this piece. The lovely amethyst chips and turquoise came from a friend’s online business Magpie Gemstones and if you have not checked out her site you will want to. She carries a fantastic selection at very affordable prices.

Corchen the Snake Goddess

Most are probably familiar with the snake goddess of the Minoan people, an image that conjures up a seminude woman consorting with snakes. Corchen is an ancient Celtic goddess who also has an affinity for snakes. While a great deal of information is lost to the modern person, much can be speculated. Nude woman and snakes are not uncommon imagery and are thought to symbolize fertility. A serpentine line is invoked in this piece.

Sorry I have been away so long. Currently I am spending my days stripping old paint off of kitchen cupboards, a job I do not recommend to anyone. Surprisingly our little house has 24 cupboards in need of some serious care...

But the good news is that I finished a beaded mask I started on years ago.

I started this mask so long ago that I cannot remember why I stopped working on it.

I now think I need to make a costume to go with this mask. Maybe once the kitchen is done.

Spring Goodies

I love spring; it is my favorite time of the year. Everything is green, the trees are budding out and flowers are beginning to awaken from their winter slumber. Anything seems possible in the spring. I have been known to leave little goodies on doorsteps at this time of year and this year will be no exception. In honor of spring I created paper cones and filled them with a selection of candy, teas, and seeds. I added glittery initials and a ribbon for easy door hanging.

Elmo Art Apron

I know that I have been an absentee blogger as of late, and I am sorry about that. We have been out of town and then back in town and now we are headed out again. As we move towards summer we will be spending a lot of time traveling. I will try and blog as much as possible, but I will probably not be around much until fall. I have several projects in the works and hopefully I will be getting many of them done this summer as I do a lot of work while riding in the car. So, I should have a great deal to post about.

My son is turning two in May. For his birthday we have invested in an art easel and finger paints. My son is crazy about Elmo and he is a considered the little red god in our home. Every morning the routine is the same: upon awakening Neil hands out hugs and kisses including a few for his good friend Nappers (see an earlier post on this monkey side-kick), a glass of milk, and then there is this little voice that follows me all over the house asking for “Elmo’s Song”. To honor this important furry deity, I thought I would surprise my beloved child with an Elmo art apron. I spent days looking for fabric to make the apron out of. The only fabric I could find was fleece. I do not want to clean paint out of fleece. So, I came up with this design.

Elmo is an appliqué that I constructed out of cotton fabric scraps.

I assembled the body of the apron out of a heavy canvas material and bright orange bias tape.

...and My Parents Come Through

As I have mentioned before there are 3 of us that live in 855 square feet. We have been living on top of ur mess for years and it has only gotten worse. At this point we cannot afford to sell our home and move into a bigger one, so here we stay. I have spent countless hours downsizing and consolidating, yet there is still a lot of stuff in our home. My husband is a musician and I always laugh because he couldn’t play something small and easily portable like spoons, no he is a drummer. And he does not own just one kit but three, along with keyboards, guitars, and sound gear. We sold our upright piano after our son was born because there was just no longer any room for it. Let’s just say our basement is full. I will only venture to the pit if I have laundry to do.

Several weeks ago I had a fit; well it was really more than just a fit. I had a full-fledged temper tantrum after I could not find my sketchpad. I hate when I have an idea and cannot find anything to sketch on. Clif agreed that it was time to look for a solution. I have so many supplies that One day my mother-in-law recommended that I put everything in the closet of our son’s room. When I told her it was already full she would not believe me and went to look. Let’s just say that she was lucky that she was able to close the door and that she did not obtain a concussion from falling objects. If I had just one hobby the mess might be better, but I have several and I always have more than one project in the works, my kitchen table can contest to that.

We had been searching high and low for a piece of furniture to store some of my supplies in. I needed something that was sturdy, all important as I hate spending money on junk that falls apart within a year. I wanted something astatically pleasing to the eye and it had to fall in to a price range that didn’t throw my husband into sticker shock. Not always an easy task, he is cheaper than I am. After hitting second-hand shops, estate sales and perusing Craig’s List my parents came through. 40 years ago my dad bought this piece of furniture for 30 dollars. It was in bad shape when he brought it home, but my dad, the ever handy-man went to work on it. He refinished it. In the pictures you can see the dark wood, that is the original color and those decorative pieces are untouched. Behind the mirror my father found a 1910 newspaper and so we know that this dresser is at least 100 years old. This old dresser brings back a flood of memories. It was always in my parents’ bedroom and as a little girl I use to stand on the top and look in the mirror (what a vain child).

I have already filled every nook and cranny. In front of the mirror is the print I won from Marie Otero at Lost Aussie. I have gotten the mat and am still waiting to find and appropriate frame. The lily pad lamp was bought at a yard sale for a dollar. I have been looking for a glass shade that will not break the bank. The shade I wanted was $125; I think I will keep looking. The hand-blown hookah has been with me for years. I had my dad cut the bowl off the top. It was to be a small table, but my son cannot keep his hands off of it. So I put it up for safe keeping.

I am very happy that my parents have decided to let me become the caretaker of such a piece and look forward to having many years of memories with it in our home. Now I can get back to work.

Wedding Cake Sleeves

I am not crazy about sweaters that you pull over your head, they are bulky and I often get too warm in them, but a cardigan, I adore. Every time I hit a thrift shop or a yard sale I look for them, I now have a large collection in just about every color. I am particularly fond of vintage cardigans and will wear them until they are riddled with holes and falling apart at the seams.

Several months ago I bought this turtleneck sweater at a thrift shop; the .25 price tag attracted me. Last week I came across it in a pile of clothes to be altered. We have had an unusually warm winter, so the knitted gloves I had been working on were put to the side while I worked on this sweater. I started this sweater by cutting the front open and sergered the raw seams.

I had planned on making simple sleeves but I got a little carried away… the sleeve now look like a wedding cake.

To carry the theme through I added a matching color flower to collar.

Felt Skull Flag

The One World, One Heart event ate up a lot of my free time, no complaints, as it was a fun ride. With my life now back to a somewhat routine schedule (as much of a routine as a 2 year old will let me) I have been able to get back to work. For several months I have started jewelry projects and not been able to finish many of them. So for right now my jewelry making is on the back burner. I am waiting for my jewelry muse to inspire me; I think she decided to head south for the winter and left my fabric muse to take over. Here is something I just finished last night.

When I was in college I wrote my senior thesis on the use of the human skull as an art object. I started the paper with the decorated skulls of Jericho. From there I used many examples from around the world and throughout history. It was a very interesting subject and very informative. At the time there were almost no books written on the subject and I spent months collecting my data. I fell in love with this subject and now use the skull in a lot of my work. With the popularity of such holidays as Dia de los Muertos and the spread of Goth culture, the skull has become a mainstream image and has lost some of it magic on the populace. With that said I still think the skull is an amazingly powerful symbol and will remain so as long as humans roam the earth.

Super Roxy to the Rescue

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Super Roxy

We were invited to a 4 year olds birthday party. I was in a dilemma as what to get her. We have a 2 year old son and right now he is all about Elmo and his Nappers (his #1 monkey). What to get a 4 year old girl who is constantly zipping around, hurdling over the family dog and thinks thought it was fun when daddy wrecked his bike with her on it, her reaction to the fall “do it again Daddy”. What else, but her very own super hero’s cape (super powers not include). Now she can cause havoc wherever she goes and her identity will remain a secret.

This cape is made from a pattern I obtained abut 15 years ago. I have used it to make capes for all of our nieces and nephews.

This time around I went with a deep purple hue, perfect for the super hero who wants to be fashionable while saving the world or picking on villainous boys.

I made a pattern for the shield and cut it out of contrasting colors of felt.

I added a button closer and an hour later I had a super hero cape just waiting for the super hero to wear it.

I really hope she doesn’t try to fly off the roof of the house in it. I once jumped off the barn with an umbrella, but that is a story better left for another time.

Knitting a Pair of Gloves

I haven’t knitted in a very long time and after many starts and stops (it’s been a VERY long time) I am finally in the grove again. I am making a pair of gloves from a book by Robin Melanson titled Knitting New Mittens and Gloves. This book is filled with lovely designed mittens and gloves and I wished I had all the time in the world to make a pair of each.

I have chosen the Glaistig design as my first pair. They are constructed out of an English Mesh Lace Pattern. I think I have lost my mind as I am teaching myself how to knit lace as I go along, hence the start and stop approach. I am using a bamboo silk combination yarn in a light shade of steel blue. Blue is not my usual color, but I have a navy jacket that I wanted a new pair of gloves for and the light blue color is a very nice contrast. Once I finish them I will post a picture.

Quick Knitting Bag

This simple bag is made out of leftovers from a dress I cut up and an old t-shirt. I cut the image of the tree off the t-shirt and appliquéd it onto the navy blue fabric. I added some quick seams and a strap and now I have something to carry my knitting in. Sometimes making do is fun.

So, I am always looking for ways to make original clothing on a very tight budget. I got the striped shirt at a thrift shop (imagine that). From bits of other old clothing I made the crab appliqué. I now have a custom shirt that has my sun sign sewn on it.

New Knitting Needles

Several years ago I bought some very nice wood knitting needles in Walla Walla. I loved them. They were hand turned and I spent a small fortune on them. Yesterday my son jabbed one of the tips into the keyhole on the bathroom door and broke the tip off. After many tears and a solemn farewell I had resigned myself that they were no more. Today my husband, who felt sorry for me, took me to buy a new pair of knitting needles. While these are not my old tried and true, they work great. These needles are a pair of Lantern Moons and are made out of Rosewood. They are light and soft in my hands. I am sure that after many projects I will be just as attached to these as l was to my old ones.

Ok, ok, I know this is not exactly a new blog. I posted this before Christmas, and then I had to remove it. I got wind that my sister-in-law was looking at my blog and I made this piece as a gift for her. Every year my sister-in-law gives the most incredible handmade gifts, she is an amazing talent. This year I wanted to return the gesture. After months of planning I pulled together all of the elements that I had collected and created this. The pendant can be removed for a less formal look. She loved it and it looks beautiful on her. The ammonite is 115 million years old and is from Madagascar.

Day of the Dead Party Skirt

I am not a big fan of wandering crowed shopping malls, looking in store windows at cheaply made, over priced clothing. Over the years I have grown tired of coming home, empty-handed, after hours of grumbling over the decline in western fashion. This is one of the reasons why for the last 30 years I have done the majority of my shopping out of second-hand stores.

I was given this skirt last year and it has sat in the back of a closet every since. It is covered in a delicate floral pattern.

I loved this festive skull image, but the shirt it came off of was a 3X and did not fit me.

I cut the elastic band from the long black skirt, serged the raw edge, put in gathers and fitted it inside the skirt with the flowers.

The floral skirt has decorative cutouts with an underskirt that peeks through. The cotton lining had been washed so much that it had shrunk. I cut the underskirt out.

I cut the skull image out of the tee-shirt and appliquéd it onto a panel I had cut from the short black skirt. I attached the decorative panel onto the front of the other two skirts.

With the leftovers I made ties and attached them to the back of the skirt(s) .

Women’s aprons of the 1940’s are often covered in flowers, sweet little song birds and geometric designs. This skirt pays homage to the apron with a modern, slightly morbid flare.

Midwinter Gifts

Every year at Midwinter Solstice I gather with a group of women friends. I have always tried to give affordable handmade gifts and this year was no exception. This summer my family spent several days at the ocean. While there, I gathered jasper from the beach. I got some of the most incredible stones. Jasper comes in a wide variety of colors. The beach where I gathered these stones tend to be covered in red jasper, but I also found yellow and green. After a light polishing, the stones natural beauty shone through.

I wanted to make little drawstring bags to put the stones in, so I went digging through my immense supply of fabric. Years ago I saw this fabric and fell in love with it. I bought several yards of it hoping that I would someday find a purpose for it.

After some cutting and sewing I transformed the fabric into little bags that were the perfect size to hold the jasper.

Come Follow, Follow Me...

In July I was treated to an amazing 40th birthday celebration. We flew down to California to spend 5 days with some very dear friends. While there I got to spend several days romping around the lovely coastal city of San Clemente, wander around the Getty Museum, have drinks in the artsy Laguna Beach community and most amazing of all, I got to attend the Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade Ball in Hollywood. The night was magickal. I created this painting to honor my very dear friend, Deidre who set the trip up. She had the most marvelous costume, which she created herself. I titled this painting, Come Follow, Follow Me… after the poem The Fairy Queen. The writer of this poem is unknown, but the words were very fitting for a night of beauty and magick. The Fairy Queen also accurately portrays the fay goddess Deidre, who spreads faerie dust where ever she goes.

Our Tree is Up

We got our tree up today.

After much debate we came to the conclusion that we needed to put up the little tree and save the big tree for another year. Over the years we have collected enough ornaments to decorate several trees, but we toned it down this year for our 19 month old son. The tree this year is a combination of vintage and new ornaments. My mother-in-law cannot help but buy every ornament she sees for her only grandson, so this year our tree is decorated for him.

There are bubble lights, the angel moves her wings and the tree spins.

Many of the ornaments were made by my husband and his brother when they were little. Under the tree is a small collection of houses that light up.

While the little one napped his father and I raced against the clock to get everything decorated. Neil was filled with wonder and delight when he saw our efforts.

Starting to Feel a Lot Like the Holidays

With the holidays fast approaching I have decided that I had better start decorating our home. Keep in mind that there is three of use living in 855 sq feet, so this year I am only putting up one tree. Yes, we have two trees:) One tree is traditional and the other is a Star Trek/Star Wars tree, we know, geek comes to mind. And the snow village will stay packed away this year, my son will miss it, be we just do not have the room. I LOVE vintage ornaments, wreaths, gaga and anything that screams tradition. I have been holding on to a box of vintage silk thread covered apples for years. I have tucked them here and there over the years but they have finally found a more permanent spot. An old beat-up wreath, some ribbon, lights and a vintage elf who has been in my possession for many a moon and Neil now has a wreath all his own.

We also added a new addition to the holidays this year, an advent calendar. I didn’t what something that was thrown away after all the candy was eaten. I wanted to be able to fill the calendar with tidbits of my own and have it be something that Neil could look forward to every year. I searched high and low for a nice, higher quality advent calendar. I looked all over town and when that was a bust I started searching the internet. I found a hand-crafted one made in Germany, but $600 didn’t sit well with me. After months of looking I found this one at Costco. Let’s just say Neil LOVES it, and I am happy with both the price and the quality.

Now off to do more decorating.

Black Velvet Jacket

I have owned this dress for several years. It is dated, but I could not convince myself to throw it out.

Just last week I found another dress made out of the same fabric at a second hand shop for a quarter.

I removed the collar and cut the front open

Here is the collar. I used it later to make a loop and button closure.

I serged the raw edges. This gave the garment a finished look without hemming.

I used the other dress to make the sleeves.

New Skirt

After a disappointing shopping trip I decided to pull out my 1960’s Singer sewing machine and have a go at making myself a skirt. My father bought my trusty work horse sewing machine at a yard sale in the 1980’s for $15; she has never let me down.

I brought out patterns and looked through some old catalogs (kept around for just such an occasion) hoping for a bit of inspiration. In a catalog I spotted a pair of traditional Taiwanese Fisherman’s Pants. The waist of the Fisherman’s paints is two sizes too big, but they are folded to fit around the waist, tied, then the top part of the paints is folded over. I always thought they looked comfortable, but that a skirt design was needed instead. I took left over fabric and in about an hour I had a new skirt. Now I am off to work on a matching top.

The poppy has been an import symbol to many cultures throughout history. Fertility to the ancient Greeks, eternal life to the Egyptians, and since WWI, they have been worn to honor veterans. Spiral Lady Wall Hanging

The spiral appears throughout history and in many cultures. It can be seen adorning early Greek tombs, on Celtic artifacts and on relics of the American Indian tribes.
